USCB History
In 1959, by another official act, the South Carolina Legislature created the Beaufort campus of the University of South Carolina on the original site of historic Beaufort College and authorized it to offer the same courses taught at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. In 1994, USCB embarked on a major expansion program. International Paper, a global leader in the paper and packaging industry, donated 80 acres of land to build an additional full-service campus for the university in Bluffton, the region’s fastest growing area. The county government agreed to finance construction of the campus if the university would designate it as a four-year institution of higher learning. When the state approved its new, four-year status, construction began.
USCB Mission Statement
The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) responds to regional needs, draws upon regional strengths, and prepares graduates to contribute locally, nationally, and internationally with its mission of teaching, research, and service. USCB is a senior baccalaureate campus (1,400 to 3,000 students) of the state's largest public university. It offers degree programs in the arts, humanities, professions, and social and natural sciences delivered through on-site instruction and distance education, along with an active program of co-curricular activities and athletics. It serves a racially and culturally diverse student body, including military personnel, veterans and their dependents, and draws students from the South Carolina Lowcountry, from around the country, and from around the world. USCB enriches the quality of life for area residents of all ages through its academic programs, continuing education, artistic and cultural offerings, community outreach, collaborations with regional initiatives, and life-long learning opportunities.
Jane T. Upshaw Biograpgy
Jane T. Upshaw is the chancellor of the University of South Carolina Beaufort, South Carolina’s newest baccalaureate institution. Under her leadership, USCB has become a four-year-degree-granting institution. The university offers 14 baccalaureate degrees, the newest ones being Studio Art and Computational Science.
